Snopko, Leonard ; Doboš, Bohumil (advisor) ; Kofroň, Jan (referee)
The thesis deals with the European Union Military Training Mission (EUTM) in Mozambique, which has been operational since 2021. The EU built on the foundations of the Portuguese training mission, which started training a few months earlier. Portugal, in particular, is a long- standing partner of its former colony on the African continent, with which it has regularly updated its bilateral Defence Cooperation Framework Programme - 'Programa-Quadro' - since the Carnation Revolution. In response to the insurgency by the militant group Ansar al- Sunna wa Jama'a (ASWJ) in Mozambique's northern region, Cabo Delgado, in October 2017, Portugal explored adding a new sixth cooperation Project with Mozambique to their Framework Programme. It was to support the training and capacity-building of the Mozambique Defence Armed Forces (FADM) for counter-insurgency operations. The formalisation of this project took place in Lisbon in May 2021 with the signing of a new 'Programa-Quadro' by both the Portuguese and Mozambican Ministers of National Defence. Simultaneously, Portuguese officials took the opportunity of the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2021 to discuss the implementation of the EUTM Mozambique. It was to build on the Portuguese training mission to strengthen the FADM capabilities...

The media image of the Carnation Revolution in the Czechoslovak period press
Lukášová, Kateřina ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis is focused on an analysis of the Portuguese Carnation Revolution that took place on April 15, 1974 and its media image in the Czechoslovak press of that time. The Carnation Revolution was a non-violent military coup that overthrew the long-term dictatorial Estado Novo regime and started the process of democratization. This process faced many challenges, it took two years to form a democratically elected parliament that approved the constitution of the newly formed Portuguese Republic. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to compare the interpretation of the Carnation Revolution and its key moments, that threatened the democratization process, in the Czechoslovak newspaper Rudé právo with historical sources to determine whether the official party press of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia deviated from them in order to glorify the Portuguese Communist Party and their actions in the Provisional Government. At the same time, this thesis compares the interpretation of the Portuguese regime transformation in exile press Svědectví and Listy. The analysed events are: the Carnation Revolution (April, 25 1974), the September attempt of a political coup (September, 30 1974), the March attempt of a political coup (March 12, 1975) during the democratization process and the formation of...
Pandemic and governance: Comparison of the Czech Republic and Portugal
Bechinský, Jan ; Guasti, Petra (advisor) ; Brunclík, Miloš (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the topic of pandemics and governance, and compares the Czech Republic and Portugal. This topic was chosen by the bachelor thesis because of the similarities between the two countries and also because of the high increase of infected people at the beginning of 2021. The research question that the thesis will try to answer is: What factors are critical to coping with a pandemic? Where the thesis has identified three criteria that it will compare for both countries, namely government institutions, government communication and government instruments. She chose these factors on the basis of finding out how the governance factor works in the country and to what extent the government is able to influence the course of the pandemic. First, the thesis will look at the literature it will draw from, explain how the world has responded to the covid pandemic, why the thesis chose South Korea and Japan as benchmark countries, and focus on how pandemic governance affects the degree of democracy. The thesis will then show the methods used to conduct the analysis, why it chose Portugal and the Czech Republic as benchmarks, and finally explain the time period it examines. In the last part of the thesis, it analyses first the governance of the East Asian countries, then the Czech Republic and...
Democratization of Portugal and Romania: is it possible to study transitions to democracy by unified models?
Kasper, Petr ; Kučera, Rudolf (advisor) ; Šušlíková, Lada (referee)
In my paper, I will attempt to answer the question "Is it possible to study transitions to democracy by unified models?" I will seek for an answer using cases of Romania and Portugal, the two states where authoritarian rule had the form of personal dictatorship and was overthrown without government cooperation. My assumption is that studying by unified model is not possible and I will try to find evidence for this statement. In my paper I use theoretical work of Samuel P. Huntington, Vladimíra Dvořáková and Jiří Kunc who study types of transitions to democracy. Dvořáková and Kunc also describe phases of these transitions. From work of Adam Przeworski I use the view of democratization causes. Using these theoretical concepts I will study specific cases of democratization in Romania and Portugal. I will use works of Miroslav Tejchman, Kurt W. Treptow and Jiří Kocian in case of Romania and Jan Klíma, Simona Binková, Zuzana Budinová and Kenneth Maxwell in case of Portugal.

It describes its evolution in time, concentrating on the comparison of its specific waves. The work gives an overview of the factors that cause that the Brazilians often choose Portugal as their target country, as well as treaties that give this relationship an international framework. The thesis analyses the causes, development and consequences of this migration flow. The second part of the work is dedicated to the comparison of the first wave of immigration that started in the late 1980s, and the second one, that took place between 1998 and 2003. The work aims to prove that both waves differ in motives of emigration, as well as in qualification and education level of the emigrants and their incorporation on the Portuguese labour market.
